IxD — UX Talk + Blue Law Billboards
Listening to Dean Schuster’s talk was incredibly insightful, especially when it came to the non-visual design of user-experiences. Hearing about user research and creating simple ways to navigate a site gave me more intuition in designing page layouts and navigation. The business discussions in the talk were also a highlight for me, especially the information on clients and the monetary value of a website, including updates and maintenance. Generally, this talk gave me a lot of knowledge about the design industry in both the creative and business domains.
Creating a campaign around my chosen blue law, I opted to use an elegant yet subversive approach. This campaign is centered around the law that men must marry women if they promise to do so. Using elegance with dry, sarcastic, and sassy taglines seemed to work for the campaign, as it catches and maintains the attention of viewers due to its shocking and likely unbelievable messaging. All three billboards use an opulent style meant to convey the idealized position marriage holds in many women’s minds. This should allow women to relate to the messaging while inviting men to understand their responsibility (or lack thereof) in a relationship.
