IxD — Variables and Blue Law Reflection

Reading about design tokens and how Figma’s variables feature implements them was very exciting for me as someone who is both a designer and programmer. As a programmer, creating a readable, maintainable codebase that can adapt as goals shift is important. It’s also important that a program can receive a wide range of input variables to support a wide range of use cases, especially if it is a library. I see design tokens and Figma variables as a tool to create a more maintainable design file for a design team while also supporting personalization for end users and the environment they are using the product in.

The Blue Law project was fun for me as I got to experiment with the Lover archetype and using traditionally elegant, romantic, and seductive imagery and typography. Lightly using dry humor to accompany the central message of the campaign was also a great experience. Designing the billboards expanded my range when it came to 3D design. The website design process was the most beneficial to me as I grew to deeply appreciate wireframing. Wireframing my site before adding style made adding style so much easier and intuitive. Prototyping was also interesting, although I left wanting more out of Figma’s prototyping system when trying to do more advanced things. Overall, this project tested my skills in a very well-rounded way and I came out of it with more confidence in web design.
